Wek Abonyo Kwani (Let Abonyo Study)
Wek Abonyo Kwani is the story of Abonyo Sylvia Rose (Akello Vicky), a 13-year-old girl who wants to study, but her father Obiti Salvatorio (Laury Lawrence Ocen) and his cantankerous Son Okelokoko (Martin Ogwang Joadongo) want her to marry. Her only ally is her mother Merujoci. They attempt to force her into early marriage fails and Abonyo’s father eventually allows her to sit Primary Living Examinations with the hope that she would fail miserably, but she manages to pass very well, emerging the best performing candidate in the whole of northern Uganda.
This play was written by Okaka Opio Dokotum in the year 2000 to promote girl child education. The play was commissioned by Action Aid Uganda and was performed extensively in schools and sub counties in then Apac District. This play was eventually adapted into film by the author as director and became the first feature film in Luo. It’s the most famous Luo film to date and has been used by many organisations around the world to promote girlchild education and women’s rights. The play is also taught in the Ordinary and Advanced Level Leblango programme by the Ministry of Education, and is also on taught at Makerere University in the Luo Language Programme.
