Wek Abonyo Kwani (Let Abonyo Study)
Wek Abonyo Kwani is the story of Abonyo Sylvia Rose (Akello Vicky), a 13-year-old girl who wants to study, but her father Obiti Salvatorio (Laury Lawrence Ocen) and his cantankerous Son Okelokoko (Martin Ogwang Joadongo) want her to marry. Her only ally is her mother Merujoci. They attempt to force her into early marriage fails and Abonyo’s father eventually allows her to sit Primary Living Examinations with the hope that she would fail miserably, but she manages to pass very well, emerging the best performing candidate in the whole of northern Uganda.
This film was adapted in 2002 from the play of the same title play by Okaka Opio Dokotum the author assisted by Lawry Lawrence Ocen, and became the first feature film in northern Uganda. It is the most famous film in Lango and Acholi and the Luo speaking diaspora to date. The film has been used by many organisations around the world to promote girlchild education and women’s rights. The film is also used alongside the play in the Ordinary and Advanced Level Leblango programme by the Ministry of Education, and at Makerere University in the Luo Language Programme.
